A recent study, published online in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, suggests that certain medications may be at increased risk of erectile dysfunction.
A new study, reported in theJournal of Sexual Medicine, shows that some medicines, including certain antidepressants, may be linked to an increased risk of erectile dysfunction.
Researchers from University of California, San Diego, studied more than 600 men in the United States who had experienced symptoms of erectile dysfunction after starting a prescription drug treatment for sexual dysfunction.
A group of men, including men taking the antidepressants Paxil and Paxil CR, were given a placebo and were tested in laboratory testing for signs of erectile dysfunction.
The researchers found that those taking antidepressants were at increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction and increased the risk of erectile dysfunction when taking Paxil.
Researchers also found that those taking Paxil CR and taking antidepressants were at increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction, as well. The researchers found that those taking Paxil CR were at a much higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction than those taking antidepressants.
In addition, the study suggests that certain antidepressants may also be linked to an increased risk of erectile dysfunction.
"These findings provide evidence that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may be contributing factors to the development of erectile dysfunction," said senior author Dr. Andrew M. Schulman, assistant professor in the department of urology at the University of California, San Diego. "These findings are important to consider for potential therapeutic purposes, particularly when treating depression and anxiety disorders."
According to the study, a study in thefound that those taking antidepressants had an increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction, and that those taking antidepressants also had an increased risk of developing a condition known as depression.
The researchers also suggested that certain SSRIs may be more likely to cause erectile dysfunction, which they said is related to depression.
"This is a critical finding," said Dr. Emily Carter, a professor of urology at the University of California, San Diego.
The researchers reviewed more than 600,000 patients from nearly 1,000 psychiatric clinics in the US over a period of 18 months, with the average age of the participants ranging from 38 to 63 years.
The study involved 677 men, who were diagnosed with depression and had a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction.
Researchers also looked at a group of 10 drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are used to treat depression and anxiety disorders.
The researchers found that those taking antidepressants were at increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction and the risk of erectile dysfunction was increased by an additional 18 percent.
Researchers also found that those taking Paxil CR were at increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction, as well. The researchers said that the drugs were also at a greater risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
"The researchers conclude that these findings may be relevant to other antidepressants and other health issues that affect the brain, or that affect blood flow to the penis, or that affect blood flow to the brain," said senior author Dr. Donald R. Smith, professor of urology at the University of Southern California.

A Hong Kong resident has claimed he took 100,000 counterfeit Viagra pills for personal use, in a bid to save his life.
Chen Li, who lives in the area, claims he took 100,000 fake pills in a bid to save his life.
The counterfeit pills contained the names of a Hong Kong pharmacy which was selling the pills and were in fact sold online. Li has told the outlet that the pills were fake and contained the names of the owner of a Hong Kong pharmacy.
